What Causes Neck Pain?

The cervical spine or C-spine starts at the base of your skull and includes seven small vertebrae. Sometimes prone to accident, injury and life activities, neck pain is a common complaint. The pain symptoms vary and are sometimes accompanied by headaches and additional symptoms.

The American Chiropractic Association points out that your lifestyle potentially results in neck pain, due to poor posture, weak abdominal muscles, obesity or emotional stress. Leaning over a computer or a workbench or other work activities potentially result in pain.

What Are The Symptoms?

Osteoarthritis affects the C-spine, often resulting in aching, stiffness and pain. As you age, cartilage deteriorates and some people experience bone spurs forming along the cervical spine. Spinal stenosis, often thought of as affecting the lower spine does cause symptoms in the C-spine, including pain. Compression and entrapment of small nerve roots potentially result in numbness, shoulder and arm pain, along with pain affecting the neck. Degenerative disc disease potentially leads to C-spine pain as a result of bulging or herniated discs.

The aging process is another cause of neck pain and occurs as a result of one of the common spine disorders or a combination of spine disorders. Injuries possibly result in neck pain due to the fact that whiplash injuries affect the neck, possibly resulting in injury to muscles, ligaments, nerve roots or discs of the C-spine. Sprain or strain caused by accidents also result in pain for some people. Headaches also occur with some neck injuries.

What Are Some Neck Pain Treatment Options?

The cause of neck pain often leads to a visit with a chiropractor, particularly for individuals wanting to avoid the multiple risks typically associated with taking opioid pain relievers.
